The annual conference of the Modern Interiors Research Centre has established itself as a leading forum for international, interdisciplinary debate on the history and theory of the modern interior. In 2010 the conference will bring together architectural and design historians, theoreticians and practitioners, to explore the theme of Interior Lives.

7th Conference of the International Committee of Design History and Design Studies (ICDHS)

The conferences of the International Committee of Design History and Design Studies (ICDHS) aim to assess the current state of affairs of design history and design studies.
The seventh ICDHS conference, “Design and Craft: A History of Convergences and Divergences,” brings the relation between design and craft to the fore.
This theme offers an excellent opportunity to gather new design historical and theoretical research from over the world in a focused discussion on regional specificities as well as the impact of global processes of industrialisation.
If, until now, design history has been largely dominated by the Western narratives of industrialization, then moving the focus towards non-industrial design practice might bring non-Western scholars to the forefront.
Moreover, previously marginalized design histories in industrialized countries can finally get a voice.

4T annual meeting

Since 2006, 4T (an informally organized group of scholars and designers in Turkey) has discussed various aspects of design history in Turkey by means of annual meetings.
The latter have established a productive platform of communication between the participants and the proceedings have been published.
Starting with the fourth meeting we plan to expand this platform at an international level.
The first stage of this expansion involves bi-lingual (Turkish and English) publication of the proceedings of the 2009 meeting

The Eighth International European Academy of Design Conference "Design Connexity" took place between the 1st and
the 3rd April 2009.
As the trend towards globalisation continues there is a growing connectedness between all our actions and a growing
interdependence between the social, economic and the environmental. This increasing connectedness raises new moral
and ethical issues and challenges. This concept has been termed ‘connexity’ (Mulgan, 1998) and provides the title
for the conference and the backdrop for the themes of the EAD 08 Conference, which seeks to explore the implications
of these trends for design research and practice

Design im doppelten Deutschland

Am 13. und 14. März veranstaltete die GfDg (Gesellschaft für Designgeschichte) ihre Jahrestagung im Museum August Kestner (MAK) Hannover zum Thema Deutsche Dinge. Design im doppelten Deutschland von 1949 bis 1989. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung konnte ein Vortrag von Wolfgang Thierse, Vizepräsident des Deutschen Bundestages, und eine Podiumsdiskussion mit Herbert Lindinger und Clauss Dietel organisiert werden. Thierse referierte über 20 Jahre deutsche Einheit aus kulturpolitischer Sicht und diskutierte mit den beiden
Designern über die Rolle des Designs in der ehemaligen DDR.

Donat que l’amplitud temàtica i cronològica abarcava múltiples aspectes a tractar es van dissenyar quatre taules de discussió, distribuïdes de la següent manera: L’arquitectura domèstica: evolució i desenvolupament dels models; Representació d’espais interiors en l’art ;Interpretació de gènere i espai interior; Decoradors versus interioristes en el paisatge domèstic. A manera de compendi podem indicar que la resposta va ser molt important i que la trobada va esdevenir un èxit, tant pel públic participant com pels assistents, provinents de llocs i sectors diversos. Tercer Congreso Internacional de Tipografía: Glocal. Tipografía en la era de la globalización

En un ensayo sobre Unicode, John Hudson afirmaba que, a comienzos del siglo XXI, el diseño de tipografía estaba yendo hacia un renacimiento internacional en gran parte debido al deseo de la industria informática de vender software y hardware a gente que habla otras lenguas distintas al inglés. La tipografía se ha visto inmersa en la internacionalización del ordenador con lo que ello supone a nivel económico y cultural pues, como ha señalado Robin Kinross, la tecnología informática ha sumergido a letra en ese fenómeno que denominamos globalización.
